This piece was designed for the Asalah Fashion Competition held in Oman in May 2008. The competition sought designs that merged elements from Omani, Yemeni and Chinese cultures. This bracelet celebrates the color green for its multi-layered associations in Islamic and Chinese cultures. Green is the venerated color of Islam, symbolizing paradise. Brides in traditional Omani weddings also dress in this color for its association with hope and fertility. Jade, in its green hues, is the ornamental stone most adored and revered in Chinese culture, believed to bring good luck and ward off evil. Cloisonné beads are produced in a highly artistic enamel process mastered and made famous by the Chinese. The width and pattern of this bracelet references embroideries at the cuffs of traditional dress of China and the Southern Arabian Peninsula.
