Turquoise has been valued by many great cultures, and has rightfully gained the right to be called a 'gemstone of the peoples'. Untreated turquoise changes color, and for Tibetans this symbolizes the circle of life from birth to death. For the Navajo tribe in the United States, turquoise represents a sacred stone for the South. The Persian scholar Al-Qazwini wrote: 'The hand that wears a turquoise and seals with it will never see poverty.' Turquoise was a symbol of wealth and worn as an amulet to divert the gaze of others onto itself, and hence protect from the jinx of the 'evil eye'. (See matching anklet and necklace)
